Melbourne Art Trip 2011

Continuing on a GGHS tradition, the bi-annual Senior Art trip to Melbourne took place from the 2nd to 9th April involving a touring party of 33 people. The party travelled with Air New Zealand and was accommodated in central Melbourne at the Melbourne Metro YHA.
This was a cultural and educational trip that included visits to the Melbourne Museum, The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Centre and The National Galleries of Victoria as well as specific study programs at Monash University and the Victorian College of Art. A mid-week to Gisborne, Australia, 1 & hours south of Melbourne in the Victorian countryside included a stunning climb up the infamous Hanging Rock mountain where 3 Victorian school girls disappeared last century, never to be found. Days in the city were not complete without regular time out wondering the maze of boutique lanes filled with caf culture, Latte shops and Restaurants as well as taking in a little Retail Therapy. We were also extremely fortunate to time our trip to coincide with the Script and Tinie Tempa concerts which a number of students attended. A visit to the Old Melbourne jail where the girls witnessed the macabre collection of death masks and execution memorabilia, including a death mask of the infamous bush ranger, Ned Kelly. No journey is complete without a visit to a sky scrapper that included a flight up the 88 storey Eureka Tower to panoramic views of the city.
The next tour is set down for 2013 when again the art department looks to continue its wonderful relationship with and ongoing love affair for beautiful Melbourne!
There are other department trips planned for 2012. Health are going to Vanuatu and Languages to Europe.
